LAPTOP VS DISKS

For a long time I looked at people using computers and questioned why.  However as time went on we realised that the computer route was the best route as long as there was a back up.

So now we use computers for our karaoke with a backup of disks just in case.

So what are the advantages and disadvantages or each method.

Disk Positives.  They are physical in a box.  They work.  You just get the disk out and play it.  It is a system used for a long time and works well

Disk Negatives.  Large boxes to transport thousands of disks.  In between singers you have to wait while the KJ changes disks and gets the next track ready.  Over an evening the time adds up stopping a few people to sing at the end.  Disks can get scratched and damaged over time and you may get the track jumping.  If a singer changes their mind when they come up it is a longer time to change disks.  To find a track a book is needed and takes a while to find it.  No notes can be attached to a file to assist us and you.  If a singer is not available and they need to be switched with the next singer it takes time.  Slow process

Computer Positives. Tracks can be found quickly by a quick search, they can be played instantly after the previous track.    You can do a search by Genre or Duet etc…  If a singer changes  their mind a new track can be found in seconds.

Computer Negatives.  Computers may crash if not maintained.  Without a back up (we have one) the entertainment is over.  To use a computer you should have an expensive ProDub licence (we have one) to be allowed to transfer songs to the computer.  Software to play the karaoke tracks can be expensive and a lot of karaoke’s use copied software (we bought the software and it is fully licensed to us).

So if you have both systems then you have the best of both worlds and you can be rest assured all the negatives above are not a worry.
